Folk Craft- A Technology Less Heard Of

Updated: Aug 6, 2021

Confused and misinterpreted by many, Technology is one of the keywords that represent the Modern era. Millennials often interpret technology with science, gadgets, or future advancements whereas its roots go back to nearly 2 million years ago when stone tools were invented in the Paleolithic age for the daily survival of humankind.

(Image description: Chopping stone from the lower paleolithic era, around 1.8 million years old founded at Olduvai Gorge, Africa. Material: Hard green volcanic lava. Size:23.8cm x 10 cm)

Stone tools that were hand-carved to solve the problems still exist in the form of traditional handicrafts like “jali ka kaam”, “nakkashi” etc all across the globe. One can acknowledge that how folk crafts are not just expensive textiles or beautiful artifacts but a transitional skill set that has survived millions of years because of its sustainable and timeless technology. Today, Mainstream “tech” is strongly sponsored by big companies and has grasped most of the attention limiting millennial's imagination to relate technology only with the "Modern Tech".

"Human is a tool user who can evolve by channeling its imagination into reality, working with hands is our natural instinct."
